Fishing on Beaver Lake: What to Expect
Fish Species in Beaver Lake
Beaver Lake is home to a variety of fish species, including:
- Largemouth Bass: One of the most sought-after species, known for their size and strength.
- Smallmouth Bass: Found in the deeper, rockier parts of the lake.
- Spotted Bass: Often caught alongside largemouth bass, particularly near the lake’s numerous points and coves.
- Striped Bass: A major draw for anglers, with some stripers reaching impressive sizes.
- Crappie: Both black and white crappie are plentiful, especially around submerged structures.
- Catfish: Channel, blue, and flathead catfish are common and can be caught year-round.
- Bream (Sunfish): Bluegill, redear, and longear sunfish are popular targets for younger anglers or those seeking a relaxing fishing experience.
- Walleye: Another prized catch, especially during the spring spawning season.
Best Times to Fish on Beaver Lake
Fishing on Beaver Lake is productive year-round, but some seasons offer better opportunities for specific species:
- Spring: This is prime time for bass fishing, as both largemouth and smallmouth bass spawn. Walleye are also more active during their spawning runs.
- Summer: Early mornings and late evenings are best for bass, as they seek cooler, deeper waters during the heat of the day. Striper fishing is popular during this season as they migrate to deeper waters.
- Fall: As temperatures cool, bass move back into shallower waters, making for excellent fishing. Crappie fishing also picks up during this time.
- Winter: Although fishing can be slower, anglers can still find success with catfish and stripers in deeper waters.
Fishing Techniques
Different techniques work well depending on the species you’re targeting:
- Bass Fishing: Anglers often use plastic worms, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits. In the spring, topwater lures are effective.
- Crappie Fishing: Jigs, minnows, and small crankbaits work well, particularly around submerged trees and brush.
- Striper Fishing: Live bait, such as shad, is commonly used, along with large swimbaits and bucktail jigs.
- Catfish Fishing: Stinkbaits, cut bait, and live bait are popular, especially when fishing near the lake’s deeper channels.
